Swallowtails

Good days for butterflies. At least for the Eastern Tiger Swallowtails right by the wash station. As these photos attest, they love the Mexican sunflowers.

And is the one in the last picture below a female Eastern Tiger Swallowtail or a different species entirely (Black Swallowtail?)? I don't know.

Nasturtium: flowers and leaves

Those who come to the farm to pick up their shares probably have seen our small nasturtium bed in front of the wash station. The bed is too small to distribute in our regular shares, but we've noticed that even though nasturtiums are in the U-Pick list shareholders almost never pick them. Please do so before they are zapped by a killer frost. Nasturtiums flowers are edible. They add color to a salad and have a mild cress-like spiciness. The leaves are also edible. Although they are stronger tasting than the flowers, a few nasturtium leaves are a great addition to a salad. 

Sunflower Series

Hello everyone. The sunflowers were amazing this past weekend! The butterflies, bees and other insects were definitely enjoying them. Enjoy! -- Roshani

Feasting on the flowering dill

Nasturtiums

Most shareholders know that nasturtium flowers are edible, but fewer are aware that their beautiful lily pad-like leaves (and leave stems) are also edible and have a more powerful peppery taste reminiscent of watercress. Good for adding to a salad or as a garnish.
